Portsmouth Naval Base

Portsmouth Naval Base, often referred to as HMNB Portsmouth, is one of the oldest and most significant naval bases in the United Kingdom, with a history stretching back over 500 years. Its architecture reflects its rich maritime heritage, blending historical fortifications, iconic buildings, and modern naval infrastructure.

Over 200no Loose cut Flat Gauged Brick Arches were manufactured for the Admiralty building, the bricklayers were tasked with installing the arches by hand. The arches were laid with a 6mm joint and encompassed a 8mm rise, this was done to reduce the visual effect of dropping where the arches look to be bending downwards.

Apex Brickcutters manufactures loose-cut arches. These are produced by cutting standard bricks, using diamond-tipped masonry saws, this ensures that the finished product has the sharp, accurate arrises associated with traditional cut brick arches.
